Dreams of the Doom Witch
Altha has returned from war a victorious disgrace. His failures compromise his father’s hopes of acquiring the most valuable shipping lane in the world and he is tasked with redeeming their House’s standing. His brother Del, preparing to study at the centre of Imperial magic, shows Altha a way: travel to the edge of the world and find what the Emperor desires most. Decunor, a mineral of mysterious and magical properties. Unknown to either of them, they are pawns in their father’s treasonous masterplan.
Alongside restoring his honour, Altha sees a chance to break from the confines of duty and obligation, to carve something out for himself. However, his iron-clad will is resisted at every turn as he tries to establish a foothold in the alien forest that marks the Empire’s borders. Preyed upon by ghouls and dragons, challenged by the indigenous sylvans who fight to protect their home, Altha begins losing himself. As old enemies ally with the sylvans and rival Imperial houses join the scramble for decunor, Altha descends into madness. His solution? The only one he knows. War.
Meanwhile, Del’s studies in the Arcanum are a cover for his true intentions: to discover the source of dark magic his father has unearthed and kept secret. As he learns how to be an Emptor, a mage who interacts with emotions, Del finds out that there is more to his own magic and decunor is the key. As Del uncovers these new powers, he learns more about himself and how he can step out from the darkness of his father’s shadow.
